How to Unclog a Drain the Right Way

Boiling Water

This method is as effective as it is simple. Start by boiling a half-gallon of water on your stove (you can use the same pot as you would for pasta). Then simply pour the water down the clogged drain. Give the heat a moment to work through the blockage before turning on the faucet to test the results.

Coat Hanger or Drain Snake

Another simple solution, this one involves physically pulling the blockage out of the drain. Grab a wire hanger from your closet and straighten it out—be sure to leave the hook at the end. With a little elbow grease, fish the hanger into your drain (hook-end first) and pull up any hair, food, or other debris. Once you’ve pulled out as much as you can, run hot water down the drain to flush out the rest.

Note: You can also purchase a simple drain snake from your local hardware store if you don’t have spare wire hangers.

Baking Soda and Vinegar

If the above steps didn’t work, it’s time to move to your pantry. Grab your baking soda and vinegar and measure out ½ cup of each. Pour the baking soda down the drain first, followed by the vinegar. Plug it up and let the mixture sit for an hour. Then, boil some water and clear it all out—and keep doing it until the blockage is gone.

Baking Soda and Salt

Mix together ½ cup of baking soda and ½ cup of salt and pour it into your clogged drain. This time, let the mixture sit anywhere from 30 minutes to 24 hours, depending on how bad the clog is. When you’re ready, boil a pot of water and flush the mixture out.
